I had never baked a cake until two weeks ago. I don’t know exactly why, but the thought of it intimidated me.
A few years ago I stumbled upon Odette Williams on Instagram. I found her aprons for kids to be adorable and promptly gifted one to a favorite little girl. Fast forward to last Christmas when Lawson, Sybil and I each got one of her aprons.
When I saw Odette was planning to release a cookbook about cake, I honestly didn’t think much of it. As I mentioned above, I had never baked a cake and didn’t really have a desire to do so. But I kept seeing rave reviews about Simple Cake and these gorgeous photos of cake. Then one day she mentioned it was on sale at Amazon for $11. After double checking the reviews online, I ordered Simple Cake.
You may be wondering why a cookbook about cake warrants its own post? I mean, I wondered the same thing! I truly love it, think it is the best cake cookbook and want to tell everyone about it, which is the reason I started blogging in the first place!
Simple Cake consists of 10 cake recipes, 15 toppings and multiple recommended combinations. Odette also mixes in stories about what these cakes mean to her and the occasions she’s made them.
So far we’ve made the chocolatey chocolate cake with chocolate buttercream frosting and the very vanilla (in cupcake form) with chocolate buttercream frosting.
Beyond making me believe I can actually bake a cake that tastes delicious, I love that I no longer think of cakes as simply for special occasions. Sometimes a middle of the week pick me up is reason enough.
Lawson and Sybil love to help in the kitchen. My hope is that they learn to value making real food with real ingredients. Letting them lick the batter and frosting doesn’t hurt either. :)
I checked yesterday and Simple Cake is still on sale for $11. If you’re looking for a summer activity with your kiddos or just want to try to bake a delicious cake, I promise you will love it!
