Weekend Roundup: No. 255

Weekend

Oh, what a week. If you’re into politics, the first primary/caucus did not go well and then came the SOTU and impeachment acquittal. Not a great week, but I’m trying to maintain perspective. It’s not the end of the world. There’s still a lot of time before November.

Closer to home, Sybil slept through the night every other night. It’s not perfect, but it’s better than last week. We had a snow day on Tuesday and very cold temperatures. This week was heavy on errands and not a lot of fun.

Sometimes it seems there’s so much to do to keep our daily lives running smoothly that there’s not enough time to play. To sit and color or put together legos. Last week I challenged myself to put my phone away for 20 minutes and do whatever Lawson or Sybil wanted without thinking about switching the laundry, taking out something for dinner, etc. I loved it. The time went by so quickly and it was freeing not to think about a million other things. That got away from me this week. I’d like to make it a daily practice.

One benefit of me not playing with them a ton is watching Lawson and Sybil play together. They are great friends. It’s fun to hear their imaginative play.

A few weeks ago I subscribed to Headspace, a meditation app. I had used a free trial two years ago and enjoyed it. There are times I feel myself spinning out of control, especially with Lawson and Sybil. I figured an annual subscription was less expensive than therapy. I’m happy to report, it’s been great. I mostly meditate before bed. I alternate doing the Patience or Sleep series.

Headspace also has a parenting and kids section. I found a good morning and goodnight meditation for kids 5 and under. Lawson and I have done them together a few times. He thinks it’s so neat so that’s been an added bonus.

Last night I went to a HeyMama event. I sign up excited about the topic and ready to meet people. Then the day comes and I would really just prefer to stay home. I’m always glad I went in the end and last night was no different. The drive home was another story – it was snowy and the roads were icy. It was the most stressful hour of driving I’ve done in a very long time.

This weekend, Lawson has birthday parties on Saturday and Sunday, Jim bought tickets for the Golf Show and I plan to fit in another long run.

My mom arrived this morning for a weeklong visit. I’m excited to see her and plan to take advantage of childcare. I haven’t been to a coffee shop by myself in months and Jim and I need some alone time too. I already made a dinner reservation for us on Saturday night.

HIGH POINT:

On the way home from the mall earlier this week, Sybil was fussy in the car (she always gets this way later in the day since she stopped napping). I don’t remember why but I asked Lawson and Sybil if they wanted to learn about Harry Potter. Lawson is all in on learning about him, which is so fun.

LOW POINT:

Every week it feels like something else is falling apart or breaking in my car. It’s almost 11 years old, so it’s understandable. I love my car and don’t want to get something new but I feel that day is coming sooner than later.

FIND OF THE WEEK:

While wandering the aisles of Target, I found this oval tray. It’s now on the center of our kitchen table with some mandarins in it.

CURRENTLY READING:

I am making my way through Boys in the Boat. There’s a lot of rowing history and terminology to learn in the beginning. I’m already intrigued by the characters and want to skip to the chapters about them, but am being patient.
