What to Pack for a Summer Beach Vacation

What to Pack for a Summer Beach Vacation

In July we’re heading to the Jersey Shore for a week with Jim’s family. Because I’m a planner and anything I don’t bring will be in transit to Denver, I’ve already started my packing list. In case any of  you are headed to a beach week of your own, I thought I’d share what to pack for a summer beach vacation.

Almost everything I’m bringing can be broken down into 4 colors: white, grey, blue and black. Although I generally stick to a neutral wardrobe, I do so even more when packing for a trip. It makes it much easier to mix and match.

I’ll be sharing my Away suitcase with Lawson and Sybil. To organize everything, I swear by these packing cubes. I’m not exaggerating when I say they’ve changed my life! Use this code to get $20 off your first order.

TOPS

I may have gone overboard with shirts. In my defense, I cut it back to these 10 items. I always pack more in the summer because everything is smaller and I can fit it in my suitcase without issue. I know that isn’t a good excuse though!

The Madewell tees and tanks are a staple in my closet. For this trip, I’m planning on a grey tee and black and grey tanks, along with a white graphic tee and a striped tee. For dressier options, I’ve got 3 blouses: striped (similar here and here), floral (sold out) and chambray.

Since I’m not bringing a jacket, I’m adding 2 sweatshirts: this cowl neck and a graphic sweatshirt from my favorite coffee spot in Minneapolis. There’s a very strong chance I’ll add in my go to striped shirt too. I can’t imagine taking a trip without it!

BOTTOMS

I redeem myself in the number of bottoms I’m packing. Sticking to my favorite jeans, 2 pairs of shorts (denim and white) and a dress I can wear as a cover-up or on its own. Other than the chambray blouse, all of the tops can mix and match with my jeans and shorts (I’ll stick to white shorts with the chambray blouse).

SHOES

Only sandals for this trip! Between my go to copper Birkenstock sandals, flip flops for the beach and a dressier pair of sandals (this year’s version here), I should be set.

ACCESSORIES

Two bags, two hats, two swimsuits. The Cult Gaia Ark bag is meant to be on a beach and a crossbody bag is clutch when you’re running after two toddlers. A fedora summer hat and my LA baseball cap. I don’t know if I’m ready for it, but really want to wear a bikini again. This high waisted bottom and fun top would be a great splurge. If that doesn’t work, I have a basic black one-piece that I love (similar here).

If I run out of room, I’ll opt to leave the Cult Gaia bag for another trip. It’s the least practical item for a family vacation and the chances of a date night isn’t high.

Of course, I’ll also be packing pajamas, clothes for working out and toiletries. We’re all looking forward to spending the week with family at the beach!
